Recording your screen
Everything starts from the menu-bar icon. Nothing is ever captured until you explicitly start a recording — there's no background capture, no screenshots on a timer, no monitoring mode.
Start a recording
- Click the Dockable icon in the menu bar and choose Record Screen….
- The picker shows live previews of every screen and window. Click the one you want.
Recording begins immediately, and the menu-bar icon switches to a recording indicator with the elapsed time.
Microphone narration (recommended)
Check Record my microphone in the picker to narrate. This is off by default and your choice is remembered for next time.
Narration is what powers everything downstream — the transcript, Ask AI answers, generated documents, flashcards, and quizzes all come from what you say. A silent recording is still a perfectly good video; it just can't become searchable knowledge.
The first time you record with the mic on, macOS asks for microphone permission with a standard popup — click Allow and you're set.
The camera bubble
Check Show my camera to add a picture-in-picture bubble of your face over the recording — useful for walkthroughs where seeing the presenter builds trust. When enabled, two small controls appear:
- Position — pick which corner the bubble sits in.
- Size — small, medium, or large.
The bubble is composited directly into the recording (mirrored, like looking in a mirror, so it feels natural). It's baked into the final video — not a separate layer — so it appears everywhere the video plays.
Note: If the camera is unavailable or permission is denied, the recording continues without the bubble rather than failing. The recorder's activity log notes what happened.
While recording
- The menu-bar icon shows elapsed time.
- To finish, click the icon and choose Stop Recording.
Recordings are capped by a daily device quota (30 per day) to prevent runaway usage.
FAQ
Can I record just one window instead of the whole screen?
Yes — the picker lists individual windows alongside full screens. Pick a window and only that window is captured.
Does it record my computer's audio (system sound)?
Not today. The mic option captures your voice; system audio capture isn't available yet.
Do mic and camera settings persist?
Yes. Whatever you chose last time — mic on/off, camera on/off, bubble corner and size — is pre-selected next time you record.
